Northern Thailand faces four months of crisis-level air pollution each year, profoundly impacting daily life and driving rising rates of respiratory illness—especially among children and vulnerable communities.
Beyond The Village (BtV) began with a simple belief: clean air shouldn’t be a privilege. What started in 2023 as DIY air purifiers and PM2.5-free rooms has grown into a community-powered movement—bringing practical, low-cost solutions to schools, healthcare centers, prisons, and underserved areas, with impact now extending beyond the North.
Over the past three years, we have reached more than 20,000 people and transformed 150+ spaces into safe breathing environments, protecting over 5,000 children and patients. Through workshops and open-source designs, communities learn, adapt, and take ownership because lasting change doesn’t come from giving, it comes from empowering.
In North Thailand, our villages find themselves beneath a dense haze of PM2.5 during smog season, largely attributed to open burning. Nature has its course, but human-driven activities, like forest fires and the burning of farm waste, amplify the problem. Open burning, a long-held tradition, undeniably affects our environment, and while significant, there are other contributing factors.
In our serene village, every person, from the young to the elderly, from farmers to officials, plays a role in this story. It isn’t about casting blame but coming together, understanding, and working cohesively.
We aren’t grand heroes of a tale, but humble villagers with the power to influence our immediate surroundings. Together, we can work towards clearer skies, reflecting the pure intentions and heartfelt love we hold for this land that has given us so much.
Air pollution doesn’t discriminate, but its impact does. While some can protect themselves, others—especially low-income communities without access to basic protection—remain vulnerable. Beyond the Village ensures that everyone, regardless of their means, can breathe
safely.
We provide cost-effective DIY air purifiers and PM2.5-free room solutions for communities affected by air pollution. While these are not permanent fixes, they offer immediate protection for those most in need. Designed to be simple and affordable, our DIY approach allows communities to build, use, and maintain their own solutions—helping us reach more people, faster.
